BOO Café Report

We had a blast this year at the Boo Cafe. It was so nice having the Staph camp next to us. It was much less isolating, and we were told we were good neighbors! We feel the same about them. We were happy to have been able to provide a comfortable sleeping place for Scooby with my hammock- which I promptly labeled "The Scooby Shack." It turned out to be a good hiding place for an exhausted Scooby, too- but next year he should have the garbage cans out BEFORE he goes to sleep. (wink to Michelle). And Scooby was particularly appreciative of Michael's full-service camp hosting. He spoiled Scooby with a banked fire at night, followed up with a hot cup of spiked coffee and a cold beer each morning next to the hammock as a kinder, gentler wake up.
The disappearance of our sample Boo Cafe mug was upsetting, however our disappointment was unecessary as it was returned to us from Dennyville. Turns out it was a simple case of mistaken identity...and our faith was restored.
As for the coffee...we went through 20 pounds of beans, 24 quarts of half-n-half, 40 gallons of water, and almost a full 10 pounds of sugar. We still haven't beaten our first year's record of 40 pounds of beans and more-than-36 quarts of half-n-half, and around 80 gallons of water, but this year proved Boo'ers are still caffeine addicts to the nth power. Excellent consumption, I say!
Speaking to numerous people, I discovered that at least 8 family members purposefully neglected to bring coffee-making supplies this year- counting on Boo Cafe to reduce that bit of their camp clutter. I assume the number was a tad bit higher though! That made us feel pretty special and appreciated- and VERY GLAD our personal emergency didn't manage to keep us from making it out this year. Frightening moment for us, and now I realize it could have potentially caused major crisis and chaos within camp. Phew. Bullet sucessfully dodged!
We did things a little differently this year, though, as the last two years we managed to miss most of Boo tending the brewer. We relied a lot more on the theory of self-serve. We hoped most folks would understand it's just like a coffeepot at home- just larger -and wouldn't be intimidated. We got to meander about and get a full flavored Boo with this new approach. It seemed to have worked fairly well, with only a bit of fumbling on the self-serve end. Next year we'll post instructions.
The only significant change we'd like to make for next year would be dedicated electricity. While we didn't repeatedly blow the circuit this year, it was still taking 15 minutes to brew a pot...and this backed up the groggy line of mug clutchers. Monday morning, once we pretty much had the power line to ourselves, went very quickly. If more family shows up next year, we don't want to be lynched! We'll do whatever we can to help solve that particular problem-without relying on an obnoxious generator (yuck.)
No matter what, we love doing Boo Cafe, and will continue to bring java-happiness as long as we are allowed. Great Boo. Great fun. Great family. ~Alisa and Michael
